CHINA GROVE -- Residents here will receive police services from the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office and Bexar County Pct. 4 Constable’s Office following a 4-0-1 decision by the city council to indefinitely suspend the China Grove Police Department. The vote came during a Dec. 9 special meeting, in which no members of the public were present.

Mayor Eugene Ripps, in a telephone interview with the Wilson County News, said Dec. 10 that his wife, Alderman Cathy Ripps, voted to abstain. Aldermen Mike Trainor, John Massengale, John McRae, and Doug Pruski all voted in favor of suspending the police department until after the council establishes policies and procedures for the department and for all city personnel.

“I wished it could have went some other way,” Mayor Ripps said. “Legal advice told me this was my option.”

The mayor said he hopes that the Texas Rangers will conduct an investigation of the department, in light of allegations of officers not being on patrol in the city, which he said were raised by Police Chief Larry Davis and by residents. Mayor Ripps said residents complained of seeing police vehicles in other areas of the county, not in China Grove.

“We had one month where they wrote zero tickets,” he said.

On the police department’s Facebook page, the most recent post informs the citizens that the department has been disbanded.

“We do not know the reasoning behind the disbandment but knew it would one day happen,” according to the post.
