First Lutheran Church in Floresville is seeking a Director of Youth and Family Ministry, part-time 20 hours/week. Qualifications: Have active worship life and ongoing growth in faith, understanding of Lutheran-Christian tradition, ability to work with both adults and youth, basic computer and organizational skills. Director will disciple both parents and youth grades 1-12, establish appropriate caring relationships with youth, seek opportunities to connect with youth in their environment on their schedule, organize parents into groups for children's ministry work, arrange at least 3 annual local events or trips for Sr. high youth, recruit and encourage youth and adults to take positions of shared leadership and involvement, create and implement means for regular communication with parents and youth, manage youth and family ministry calendar in collaboration with staff, parents, and youth. Viola Mazac Kurtz, born Dec. 12, 1912, in Floresville, Texas, passed away Thursday, Nov. 28, 2013.

She held a civil service job at Red River Ordinance Depot from 1944-45 and moved back to San Antonio in 1945. She was employed by the San Antonio Independent School District and retired as a cafeteria manager after 32 years.

Viola also worked for SPJST Lodge No. 133 for 22 years as a financial treasurer and reporter. Her hobbies were raising vegetables and flowers, and canning. When she retired, she enjoyed dancing, singing, and playing dominoes.

Viola was a member of St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, the Altar Society, KJT, KJZT, the San Antonio Czech Choral Club, TRS, and SPJST.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Frank Mazac and Charlie Kurtz; her parents, Adolph and Pauline Miculka; brothers George and Vladik “Stubby”; and her sisters, Agnes Reinhard and Helen Bravenec.

Survivors include her loving son, Adolph Mazac and Bootsie; a grandson, Edward Mazac and Ronda; granddaughter Carmen Mazac; a great-granddaughter, Kayla Cook and Andy; her great-great-grandson Tobias; stepdaughter Charlene; five stepgrandsons, Kyle, Scott, Todd, Craig, and Kley Semlinger; eight great-grandsons; one great-granddaughter; numerous nieces, nephews; and other loving family members and friends.

Visitation began Tuesday, Dec. 3, at 5 p.m., with a rosary recited at 7 p.m. in the Mission Park Funeral Chapel South.

Mass was celebrated Wednesday at 10 a.m. in St. Margaret Mary’s Catholic Church.

Interment followed in Sunset Memorial Park in San Antonio.
