'Walk with Mayor' in New Year
Hello La Vernia citizens,
It’s been a few months since my last article and there is much to catch up on, and with Christmas right around the corner, there is much going on!
Friday, Dec. 13, is our Wassail Walk through downtown La Vernia! Come enjoy with your neighbors as businesses, along with City Hall and the Heritage Museum, open their doors starting at 5 p.m. serving their mix of Wassail ending at the museum at 7:30 p.m.! At that time, the winners of the La Vernia Municipal Development District’s Wreath and Greater La Vernia Chamber of Commerce Holiday Decoration contests will be announced. Santa Claus will be stopping by at the La Vernia News office at 5:30 p.m. for pictures and a final chance to let him know what’s on your Christmas wish list!
Beginning the Saturday after Christmas, I’m going to be starting a “Walk with Mayor” program, mainly for me to lose some of that holiday cheer, but to have folks walk through areas of town which hold historical significance and also discuss issues going on with our city. If interested, meet me Saturday, Dec. 28, at 9 a.m. at City Hall and we’ll get a couple of miles in!
If you noticed in the paper, the University of Texas-San Antonio’s School of Architecture presented a concept of what the downtown La Vernia area could become. This is simply a vision, and a town hall meeting will be scheduled in January to get the public’s input on this subject. The drawings can be viewed at City Hall and the municipal development district office, so stay tuned for that date!
Now to some unpleasant issues: last week, we found a major sewage leak caused by blockage from items not designed to be placed in the sewer system. We were most fortunate not to contaminate the Cibolo Creek watershed! I want to extend my sincerest thanks to the San Antonio River Authority for their fast response with necessary equipment, and personnel with the expertise in dealing with this type issue. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality oversaw the city staff’s very successful efforts on mitigating any environmental impact. Thanks, guys, for your hard work! Please call City Hall with any questions regarding this situation and please be aware of what you’re placing down the sewer system.
Our city park has recently been subject to vandals and we are stepping up patrols along with other measures to both deter and catch those responsible. Folks, this is your park, and we work hard to provide a nice place for everyone to play, exercise, and enjoy the outdoors, and if you see any suspicious activities going on, do not hesitate to call our police department. It’s helpful to be as descriptive as possible with your information. We are committed to catching and prosecuting anyone who destroys public property!
One last item, garbage pickup will be the day after Christmas and New Year’s for residential customers and the Friday after for commercial customers.
Please shop local -- shop La Vernia this holiday season!
From City Hall, the staff and I want to wish everyone safe travels during the holiday season and I hope everyone has a Merry Christmas, and a safe and Happy New Year! God Bless!
Robert Gregory is the mayor of the city of La Vernia.
