Sheriff Santa delivers to families in need

Sheriff Santa delivers to families in need
Assistant Vice President Liz Urbanczyk (from left) and President Andy Eubanks of SouthTrust Bank, N.A., hand over toys the bank has collected to Wilson County Sheriff Joe Tackitt Jr. for his Sheriff Santa program, as Vice President Jacque Walpole looks on. The bank, formerly First National Bank at 545 10th St., is a drop-off site for anyone wishing to donate a new, unwrapped toy for needy families in the county.

This series profiles area organizations that help meet needs in our communities.

Organization: Wilson County Sheriff Santa Program.

What it does: Sheriff Santa provides food baskets for families in need at Christmastime and gifts for children of the families served by the program.

Background: Founded in 1996, the program served 35 families in its first year and has grown by leaps and bounds. It has served more than 300 families each Christmas in recent years.

Events, fund-raisers: Each year, the Wilson County Sheriff’s Office hosts its “Sheriff Santa Shoot-out,” a pistol tournament, to raise funds to provide for the families in need.

Area residents also can contribute toys or donations during the Sheriff Santa Soup Kitchen, set for this Sunday, Dec. 15, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Jack’s Café, 507 10th St. (U.S. 181) in Floresville. Enjoy bowls of a variety of homemade soups, prepared and donated by local businesses and organizations. Admission is a new, unwrapped toy or gift for the children. Monetary gifts, canned goods, and H-E-B or Walmart gift cards also will be gratefully accepted.

If you need help: To register a family in need or for more information, call Sharon Moy at the Wilson County Sheriff’s Office at 830-393-2535.

How you can help: Donate money, gift cards to local stores, and gifts for children from birth through 17 years. Monetary donations to help purchase items for food baskets also are appreciated. These are accepted year-round for the Sheriff Santa program and can be taken to the Wilson County Sheriff’s Office, located at 800 10th St. (U.S. 181) in Floresville.

Participate in the annual golf tournament or pistol shootout fund-raisers.

Contribute toward the costs of the fund-raisers. Door prizes and items for hospitality bags are also welcome.
