Gary Alan Wegman, a resident of McQueeney, Texas, passed away Thursday, Dec. 12, 2013, at 6:59 p.m. in the Christus Santa Rosa Hospital in New Braunfels at the age of 68 years, 3 months, and 4 days. Gary was born Sept. 8, 1945, in Fort Dodge, Iowa, the son of Elmer and Gloria Jean Eckleberger Wegman.

Gary had a happy childhood with three siblings and dozens of cousins. After school, Gary joined the U.S. Navy and served on a Landing Ship Transport during the Vietnam War. He was a proud veteran and life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Gary and Jeanette met on a blind date and married on Dec. 14, 1975, in Fort Dodge. Four years later they moved their family to Texas and remained residents of Floresville for more than 30 years. Gary loved having his kids and all of their friends around. He got involved in all of their activities. They purchased their retirement home on Lake McQueeney and moved there full time in 2009, enjoying their “coffee cruises” on the boat and wild moments on the jet ski. In July 2013, Gary was diagnosed with cancer. His family is relieved that he has been released from his suffering and is at peace, although we already miss him so much.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, Mark Stephen Wegman.

He is survived by his loving wife of more than 37 years, Jeanette Roemer Wegman of McQueeney; his precious children, Jennifer Leah Wegman of San Antonio, Jeffery Alan Wegman and wife Ronda of Houston, and Stephanie Jo Davis of Des Moines, Iowa; his treasured grandsons, Zachary Alan Wegman and Travis Jacob Wegman; his siblings, Kath Ponsar and Doug Wegman, both of Fort Dodge; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Visitation was held on Sunday, Dec. 15, from 1-3 p.m. in the Vinyard Funeral Home Chapel in Floresville.

A VFW memorial service, followed by a prayer service, was held on Sunday at 3 p.m. in the funeral home.

Following the services, Gary was cremated.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 291048, San Antonio, TX 78229-1648; or to the First Lutheran Church, 1406 Sixth St., Floresville, TX 78114.
