Restaurant owner waives first hearing
SAN ANTONIO -- U.S. District Court records indicate that two women who officials allege defrauded illegal aliens through a La Vernia restaurant await indictment on wire-fraud charges.
Yolanda Hernandez de Arteaga was set for a preliminary hearing Dec. 10. However, on Dec. 5, she waived her right to that hearing. Arteaga remains free on $25,000 bond.
Arteaga and Maria De Lourdes Montano-Vicencio are the subject of an ongoing investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), which on Nov. 19 conducted a raid of Arteaga’s home and of her Los Compadres Mexican Restaurant on U.S. 87 in La Vernia. An FBI complaint alleges the two women defrauded more than 60 illegal immigrants of cash on the premise that she would help them to obtain legal residency status.
The complaint alleges that Arteaga has received $89,600 from her victims, while Montano-Vicencio has received $15,263, in a scam that still was ongoing as of Nov. 14.
