LA VERNIA -- The La Vernia Independent School District (ISD) has a new director of finance. Kati Burke was approved by the district’s trustees Dec. 9 during a regular board meeting.
She will replace Laura Ramzinski, who announced her retirement in September.
Board President Cody Miller said after the meeting that Burke could have a possible start date of Jan. 1, depending on a release date from her current employer.
Miller added that the board also approved hiring four teachers.
The board also approved a supplemental stipend for teachers. Miller said certain details about the stipend needed further discussion before proceeding with payment.
Selection of a superintendent search firm to find a replacement for former Superintendent Tom Harvey was tabled until the January meeting. Trustee Janice Gimbel voiced concerns about proceeding too quickly with hiring a new superintendent; she feels the district needs a year of stability before approving a superintendent candidate.
In other business, the trustees approved two budget amendments. One is for roof repairs to the junior high and high school campuses. The second was for final construction and furniture costs for the district’s newly renovated buildings.
The trustees also approved:
•The annual independent audit performed by Armstrong, Vaughn & Associates, P.C.
•An overview of the District’s Financial Integrity Rating System of Texas.
•A District Improvement Plan.
•For Mayor Robert Gregory to represent the La Vernia ISD for 2014-15 on the Wilson County Appraisal District board.
•Four candidates as directors for the Guadalupe Appraisal District’s board of Directors for 2014-15.
•Nominating the La Vernia News for the Texas Association of School Boards’ Media Honor Roll.
La Vernia Independent School District Dec. 9 regular meeting. In attendance: Board President Cody Miller; trustees Janice Gimbel, James Barnett, Susan Reinhard, and Janette Chall; interim Superintendent Linda Bettin; Superintendent’s Secretary Diane Marsh; Assistant Superintendent Dr. Diane Fisher; attorney Tony Resendez.
