Letter: The American spirit is wonderful to behold
Rotary Club President Gary Carman proudly poses for a quick pic as he volunteers his time “ringing the bell” for the Salvation Army at the Walmart in Floresville.
This past week I had the opportunity to participate in two events that gave me the opportunity to see my fellow Americans at their best. On Dec. 14, several of us attended the Wreaths Across Texas ceremony in the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio.
How it works is wreaths are purchased by relatives, friends, and those interested in honoring the fallen heroes. The ceremony itself was filled with music, singing, the symbolism of folding of the flag, the symbolism of the wreaths, and many other colorful aspects of military tradition.
All in all, my heart filled with pride at being an American, as we paid tribute to those who have fallen to protect our freedom.
I also spent a few hours ringing the bell for the Salvation Army. My station was at one of the doors to Walmart. As I rang the bell, holiday shoppers contributed to the red kettle. Children pushed coins and bills into the kettle. Adults smiled, said Merry Christmas, and gave a little or a lot. Without exception people were friendly, happy, and filled with the holiday spirit. One woman told me that at a time in her life, when she was destitute, the Army helped her out. And, yes, one person suggested that I should play Santa Claus.
God bless America!
President, Floresville Rotary Club
