A Christmas Reflection

Grumbling engines, crowded lots,

Surging masses, crying tots,

Many choices, obscure signs,

Harried clerks and lengthy lines.

Store that had it’s out of stock,

(Too late now to beat the clock),

Wrong-sized boxes -- not the shape --

Misplaced nametags, twisted tape.

Leaning tree with tangled chord,

Best friend’s tardy, someone’s bored,

Gloomy weather, drunken guest.

Never mind, we try our best.

We endure these all ... and more

For the day we’re hoping for:

A very merry Christmas.

But looking back across the years,

It wasn’t what it now appears.

Smiling faces, cheerful songs,

Hopeful greetings ending wrongs,

Scents of cedar, pretty lights,

Cocoa hot on cozy nights.

Children’s laughter, candy canes,

Church bells ringing, colored panes,

Ample presents wrapped up tight,

Feeling magic taking flight.

We enjoy these all ... and more

For the day worth hoping for:

A very merry Christmas.
