LA VERNIA -- Although most high school students will be enjoying a break for the holidays, the Bear and Lady Bear basketball teams will be hard at work Dec. 27-28, as La Vernia hosts a boys and girls tournament. The Bears and Lady Bears need support against a number of quality visiting teams, though, and are looking for students and members of the community to lend their support.

On the girls’ side of things, a total of seven teams will join the Lady Bears in tournament play. Teams from Falls City, Eagle Pass, Somerset, Hondo, Lytle, Runge, and Bloomington will on be on hand.

Games will start at 8 a.m. on Dec. 27, and will go throughout the day, with the final game starting around 6:30 p.m. After a day of pool play, the teams will play out their brackets until one team is left to claim the championship. It is the Lady Bears’ final tournament of the season, and the team is looking to end on a high note.

At the same time the girls are playing, the Bear basketball team will also host a tournament. Joining La Vernia are teams from Hondo, Karnes City, Marion, and Taft. The five teams will play each other at least once en route to finding a tournament champ.

The Bears will play in the auditorium gym on Dec. 27, and will move over to the high school gym on the 28th. The Lady Bears will play opposite of them, starting in the high school on Friday and moving to the auditorium on Saturday.
