A lot of residents within the Wilson County News coverage area are gearing up to ring in 2014 with a bang, as fireworks continue to be sold until Jan. 1. The Wilson County Commissioners Court has not imposed a ban on the detonation of fireworks in the unincorporated areas of the county and there currently is no ban on outdoor burning.

However, residents are reminded that despite whether a ban on fireworks or outdoor burning has been declared, they still are civilly liable for any property damage these activities might cause.

These are some safety tips:

•Never allow young children to play with, or ignite, fireworks.

•Always have an adult supervise fireworks activities.

•Never try to relight or pick up fireworks that have not fully ignited.

•Never point, or throw, fireworks at another person.

•Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose nearby in case of fire or other mishap.

•Douse spent fireworks with plenty of water before discarding.

More safety information is available at http://1.usa.gov/1haaS93.
