1933-2013

Thomas Howard Raabe, a lifelong resident of Wilson County, entered eternal rest Friday, Dec. 27, 2013, at 4:24 p.m. in the Methodist Hospital in San Antonio at the age of 80 years, 8 months, and 28 days. Howard was born March 29, 1933, in Dewees, Texas, the son of Otto William and Rose Agnes Winker Raabe.

After his schooling, Howard worked with Montgomery Ward in San Antonio for 20 years, and also ranched with his father and his brothers. Howard married Mary Frances Jauer on Oct. 22, 1960, in St. Boniface Catholic Church in Hobson. Howard rode horses and raised cattle, and enjoyed fishing and gardening. He was blessed with a “green thumb” and kept a one-acre garden for many faithful years. He and Frances sold vegetables from their garden and were known as the “veggie” people to many. Howard was truly a gardener for God.

Howard was preceded in death by his parents; and his siblings, Barbara Marie Raabe, William Floyd Raabe, George Francis Raabe, and Kenneth Arthur Raabe.

He is survived by his loving wife of more than 53 years, Frances Raabe; his children, Bruce Raabe and friend Neomi Azzoz, Sharon Caraway and husband Roger, Ralph Raabe and wife Lori, and Roxanna Raabe and friend Tim Goodrich; his grandchildren, Tara Raabe, Matthew Raabe and wife Crystal, Derek Raabe and wife Kathleen, Tiffany Olivares and husband Andrew, Brittany Jensen and husband Adam, Amber and Alexis Azzoz, Thom Raabe, Travis Raabe, Amanda Caraway and fiancé Richard Garcia, Emily Caraway, Claire Caraway, and Russell Caraway; his great-grandchildren, Adalyne and Gwendalyn Jensen, Andrew E. Olivares Jr., and June Raabe; his brother, David Raabe and wife Teresa; his sister, Irene Hons and husband Anthony; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Visitation was held on Sunday, Dec. 29, at 4 p.m., followed by a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. in the Vinyard Funeral Home Chapel in Poth.

A funeral Mass was celebrated on Monday at 3 p.m. in the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Poth, officiated by the Rev. Grzegorz Szewczyk.

Interment followed in the Blessed Sacrament Cemetery in Poth.

Serving as pallbearers were Curt Raabe, John Raabe, Peter Hons, Charles Valchar, David Delgado, and Gary Raabe.

Serving as honorary pallbearers were Matthew Raabe, Derek Raabe, Thom Raabe, Travis Raabe, Russell Caraway, Terry Gawlik, Bobby Raabe, Bob Cox, and Bill Mutzig.
