Charlotte M. Artman Mendoza, a lifelong resident of Calaveras, Wilson County, Texas, entered eternal rest Friday, Dec. 27, 2013, at 12:24 a.m. in Country Care Manor in La Vernia at the age of 87 years, 7 months, and 11 days. Charlotte was born May 16, 1926, in Detroit, Mich., the daughter of Andrew and Hulda Edwards Artman.

After completing her education, Charlotte retired as a statistician with Joske’s Department Store in San Antonio after many years of faithful service. Charlotte married Joseph M. Mendoza on April 9, 1954, in Roseville, Mich. Joseph, Charlotte’s beloved husband of 50 years, preceded her in death on May 5, 2004. Charlotte dedicated her later years from 1988 to 2011 raising her special needs grandson, Alexander J. Martinez. Charlotte enjoyed reading history and especially loved participating in and helping with Alexander’s Special Olympics.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph M. Mendoza; her beautiful daughters, Petra Mendoza Martinez and Erica Schroeder Reyes; and her two brothers, Gerald Artman and William Artman.

Charlotte is survived by her beloved grandson, Alexander J. Martinez; her loving children, Sheryl Garcia, Barbara Morrow, Raymond Schroeder, Jose Mendoza, and retired U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Rosalinda Oliver; her 16 precious grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and sisters Dorothy Rohloff and Helen Okalski.

Visitation was held on Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2014, at 5 p.m., followed by a recitation of the rosary at 7 p.m. in the Vinyard Funeral Home Chapel in Floresville.

A funeral Mass was celebrated on Thursday at 1 p.m. in St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Elmendorf, officiated by the Rev. Andrew Kasara.

Interment followed in the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio.

Serving as pallbearers were Raymond Schroeder, Jose Mendoza, Paul Morrow, Joe Reyes, Ronald Oliver, and Anthony Garcia.
