Year in Review: Patterson to leave East Central ISD
EAST CENTRAL -- For the East Central Independent School District (ISD), 2013 was a year like many others, though some big changes are coming for 2014.
Perhaps the biggest news in 2013 was the retirement announcement of longtime Superintendent Gary Patterson. After 14 years at the helm, Patterson will retire, citing the desire to spend more time with his family as his primary reason.
In the wake of the tragedy in Newtown, Conn., East Central ISD escalated plans to improve security and access to the district’s many campuses. In April, the board approved a motion to allow the district to seek bids for entryway renovations at six campuses.
At the same April meeting, the board also approved nearly $1 million in construction for upgrades at Hornet Stadium, and to install a track at Legacy Middle School.
While relations between Patterson and the board were harmonious, not all of the news out of East Central was good. In April, an investigation was made into an incident in which a teacher inappropriately tied a student to a chair. The student was not harmed. The investigation was handled through official channels, per the district’s procedures. The teacher was placed on administrative leave.
