Year in Review: Faces come and go for Floresville ISD during 2013
FLORESVILLE -- From the board of trustees to the district’s faculty, the Floresville Independent School District (ISD) saw a lot of changes during 2013.
From May 15, 2012, to June 18, 2013, the board accepted at least 76 letters of resignation, and 14 additional staff members retired. This is according to a response to an open records request the Wilson County News submitted June 18. Eight days later, former Superintendent Jerry Lee Hunkapiller resigned amid pressure following a TV news story related to a party he attended at the district’s bus barn.
Assistant Super-intendent Sherri Bays was selected to serve as interim superintendent. The board of trustees’ work to hire a permanent superintendent was delayed when two board members -- Douglas Shoemaker and Freddy Carrillo -- resigned within a month of each other. Special elections were held during the Nov. 5 election to fill their unexpired terms, along with elections for two regular terms.
The election was canceled after all four candidates filed unopposed. Ryan Bippert was the only incumbent. Newcomer Steven Ibrom succeeds John Raabe, who did not file to run for re-election. Nancy Jurgajtis and Kenneth Leonhardt, respectively, replace Carrillo and Shoemaker, who both resigned during the summer.
Despite the turnover, the district managed to enjoy savings through its partnership with Energy Education.
Floresville ISD also is seeing some increased revenue from its ever-increasing tax roll, which surpassed the $1 billion mark last year.
