DPS: Vehicle strikes, kills pedestrian on U.S. 87
The investigation continues into the death of a 52-year-old man who died after being hit by a vehicle as he was crossing U.S. 87 in Sutherland Springs. The victim has been identified as Gregory Sheffield of Sutherland Springs.
According to Sgt. J. Ryan Christian of the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Highway Patrol, DPS Cpl. Javier Reyes and deputies from the Wilson County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene after a 2005 Chevrolet Avalanche being driven southbound on U.S. 87 by 40-year-old Luz Tejada of Floresville struck Sheffield. Tejada was not injured, but Sheffield was pronounced dead at 10:15 p.m. by Wilson County Pct. 2 Justice of the Peace Sara Canady.
Sheffield’s cause of death is listed as “accidental,” Canady said. The actual manner of his death remains under investigation.
Prior to her response to Sutherland Springs, Canady was called to the Connally Memorial Medical Center in Floresville, following the death of Bexar County resident Eliassar Balderas, 62, from an apparent heart attack. Balderas was with a group nearing the end of its golf game at the River Bend Golf Club before 6 p.m. when he collapsed.
One of the members of the group ran to the clubhouse for help. River Bend employees Matt Magoulas and Stephan Dawson responded and administered CPR, which they continued as the Wilson County Emergency Medical Services transported Balderas to the hospital. He was pronounced dead just after 6 p.m, Canady said.
