‘If Only the Spirit of Christmas Would Last’ throughout the year

The editorial in the Dec. 25 issue of the Wilson County News titled “May the spirit of Christmas continue throughout the year” triggered a childhood memory in me.
I was in the sixth grade at the Floresville Grammar School, and our teacher, Miss Delma Harper, had the class memorize a poem titled “If Only the Spirit of Christmas Would Last.” It started with these words, “If only the spirit of Christmas would last throughout the whole of the year, what a glorious world it would be for all in this happy atmosphere.” The next lines escape me. I know they contain phrases like “with everyone striving” and “no matter how steep the road.” It had to do with people helping people. I tried unsuccessfully to find it online. But I remember clearly the last lines of the poem -- “But strangely enough when the tree is bare and the ornaments packed away, the spirit of Christmas is lost until another December day.”
People nowadays don’t seem to have a problem giving or helping others around Christmas or even year-round. They rally around others when disasters happen. But the true spirit of Christmas that should prevail in all homes and families -- love, forgiveness, peace, and harmony -- is many times lacking. Not only throughout the year, but even at Christmas. So what good is generosity to others if we can’t be generous with those we should be closest to, with the gifts that really count? My prayer for the whole world in this new year is for peace. The peace that can only come if we let the Christ child come into our hearts.
“Come, Lord Jesus. Come, Lord Jesus. Come, Lord Jesus, come and be born in our hearts.”
