A reported gun in the possession of a student on a La Vernia Independent School District bus this morning has been verified as a toy, according to Sgt. Danny Pitts with the La Vernia Police Department.

“We did respond to the bus barn this morning, regarding a student with a gun on a bus,” Pitts said. “The student did have a gun, but it was a toy.”

The bus served students attending the primary and intermediate campuses, Pitts said, adding that the situation was resolved and no one was injured. The student was released to the school district for disciplinary action.

Interim Superintendent Linda Bettin commended the bus driver and district transportation director for their handling of the situation.

“They went through the correct procedures and knew exactly what to do,” Bettin said.

The district has procedures in place for such circumstances, she said, and added that the situation was resolved quickly, with no one endangered or harmed.

Kids should not bring toys to school when they should be learning. They know this. Especially a toy gun. Not in this day and age.
