Letter: Dissatisfaction does equal nonsupport
Re: “Mixed emotions felt from ‘message,’” Jan. 8
I know how frustrating ambivalence can be, so maybe I can help this writer.
An October 2013 Fox News poll indicated that 73 percent of Americans are dissatisfied with the direction the country is going (up 20 percent from October 2012!). This just might suggest that, although those elections were won “handily,” there is much evidence now that voters were fooled by those promises of hope, and/or were uninformed about just what “change” would really mean.
A November 2013 Washington Post/“ABC News” poll showed that if the election of November 2012 were held in November of 2013, Romney would have won. This, especially coupled with the October poll, clearly illustrates that dissatisfaction does equate to nonsupport! As do the polls regarding Obama’s approval rating, now at a new low of 38 percent (January 2014).
Mr. Gonzales also should not be offended by the truth. While there are many voters who share Mr. Obama’s ideology, and there are still others who will always be blind to its consequences, Mr. Obama was elected due to the ignorance, selfishness, and irresponsibility of the rest.
First, there are those millions of uninformed voters who were literally shocked, dumbfounded, and angered when their insurance premiums rose sky high; their policies were canceled; and they lost their plans and the doctors they liked. Had they been more informed (read: not fooled), they might not have so “handily” voted for Obama. Although millions of others were informed, their votes weren’t enough.
Next, an electoral map will show where those self-interested voters are. A look at Greece tells us more about them. They may never change.
Then there were those voters who didn’t recognize the reality that when there is a choice that has to be made, we have a responsibility to make it. Even if we don’t like the options.
There were lessons to be learned from these elections. Although the truth may hurt, maybe those voters who Mr. Gonzales feels are condemned by it will redeem themselves in 2014.
