I hope my aunt, Julia Castro, does not object to my “piggy-backing” on her very good recent article about our cousin, Raul Muniz Jr. “El Prieto” (Blackie).

Prieto lived in the Lodi community and was approximately two years younger than me. He attended El Mesias Methodist Church there in Floresville. I have no idea how he acquired the nickname El Prieto. His complexion was no different from that of the rest of our family.

He seemed to be drawn to the ministry and would often preach at Sunday services. Eventually, he received financial assistance to attend a college in El Paso. When he decided to get married, his father, my uncle Raul Sr., asked me if I would go with him to help with the driving. He had a car full of women, his wife, several daughters, and a neighbor, Mary Talamantez.

As my Aunt Julia wrote, he eventually became a state representative. El Prieto still lives in El Paso.

Rudy Elizondo is Julia Castro’s nephew and formerly of Floresville.
