WCN celebrates 30 years with awards, honors
It takes hard work, talent, and dedication to bring home awards, as many of our area youth who shine in sports and academics can attest. The diverse and skilled staff members of the Wilson County News also know a bit about what it takes to win. Their efforts paid off with a number of awards in 2013, with recognition at the state and national level.
Sports -- albeit of an unusual nature -- garnered one national award we’re quite proud to share with readers. Agriculture Reporter Pat Kopecki’s profile of rodeo bull rider Mike Lee earned honorable mention in the Best Sports Feature Story or Series category in the National Newspapers Association’s Better Newspaper Contest. This was in the daily and non-daily division, circulation 6,000 or more.
The wordplay skills of the Wilson County News crew earned the newspaper third place in the headline writing category of the Texas Press Association’s 2013 Texas Better Newspaper Contest.
Another third-place award -- this time from the Local Media Association, a national newspaper organization -- was garnered by this newspaper with its feature series, “A Year of Giving,” highlighting area organizations that do good works in our communities. Spotlighted in this series by Kopecki and Editor Nannette Kilbey-Smith throughout 2012 were groups that ranged from the American Legion to the Sheriff Santa program and Project Graduation to the Poth and La Vernia food pantries, among many others.
Design Specialist Taryn Smith-Morales snagged honorable mention in the Texas Press Association directory cover art contest using a photo by Pat Kopecki.
Publisher/Owner Elaine Kolodziej was honored with the School Bell Award by the Texas Retired Teachers Association for Outstanding Media Coverage of Educational News.
It takes everyone doing their part to excel, and these honors belong not only to our entire newspaper staff, but to you -- our readers, advertisers, and community members -- who contribute to making the Wilson County News an award-winning publication!
Not the kind to rest on our laurels, we begin our 30th year of working hard to bring our readers great community coverage of issues and events that are important to you. We invite you to celebrate our 30th anniversary with us all year, with special promotions, articles, and events celebrating you, our readers, and our communities.
This is your community newspaper, brought to you by friends and neighbors who live in the communities we represent.
Celebrate with us as we look back on the last 30 years and forward to continuing to do so!
