Offer condolences


Robert Baxter Sutherland of Luling, Texas, was born Sept. 24, 1932, in San Antonio. He went to be with the Lord Thursday, Jan. 16, 2014, at the age of 81.

Baxter was raised in Stockdale and attended Alum Creek School. He married Betty on March 4, 1956. Baxter joined the U.S. Navy at age 18, serving for 22 years in locations all over the world, such as Oakland, Calif., Guam, and Bremerton, Wash. He retired as a gunner mate technician chief. He owned his own trucking company from 1978 until 2006. During his life, he loved scuba diving, motorcycles, flying, and camping, and he spent many quality hours with his very large family that loved him so very much.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Betty Jo Roberts Sutherland; four daughters, Teresa Stewart and husband Terry, Brenda Stewart and husband Jimmy, Rhonda Farmer and husband Rick, and Karen Sutherland; six grandchildren, Nicole Klein and husband John, Jarrod, Joseph, Cory, and Sterling Stewart, and Casey Perez and husband Robert; three great-grandchildren; four brothers, Sidney Brown, James Gee, Donald Gee, and Michael Gee; one sister, Janice Jasik; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A visitation was held Sunday, Jan. 19, from 6-8 p.m. in the Finch Funeral Chapel in Stockdale.

A funeral service was held Monday at 2 p.m. in the First Baptist Church in Stockdale, with the Rev. James Stewart officiating.

Interment followed in the Stockdale Cemetery in Stockdale.
