Joyce Ann Smith Ruks, a lifelong resident of San Antonio, Texas, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2014, at 5:05 a.m. in the Mission Trail Baptist Hospital in San Antonio, at the age of 59 years, 4 months, and 5 days. Joyce was born Sept. 10, 1954, in San Antonio, the daughter of Joyce Wade “J.W.” and Veronia McInvale Smith.

After graduating from Highland High School in San Antonio, Joyce worked as a nursing home receptionist for many years. Joyce married James Wesley Ruks on Aug. 2, 1974, in San Antonio.

James, Joyce’s beloved husband of more than 23 years, preceded her in death Feb. 10, 1998. She was also preceded in death by her mother, Veronia McInvale Smith.

Joyce is survived by her son, James Wade Ruks and wife Melanie of San Antonio; her grandchildren, Marshall Wyatt Ruks, Cody James Ruks, and Austin Wade Ruks, all of San Antonio; her father, Joyce Wade “J.W.” Smith of San Antonio; her brother, Larry Dean Smith and wife Sharon of San Antonio; her brother-in-law, Kenneth Ruks and wife Angela of Castroville; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation was held Friday, Jan. 17, at 5 p.m. in the Vinyard Funeral Home Chapel in Floresville.

A funeral service was held Saturday at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Mark Davis officiating.

Interment followed in the Marcelina Cemetery in Wilson County.

Serving as pallbearers were Kenneth Finch, William Ruks, Keith Sample, Glen Connor, Brandon Boone, and Charlie Wayne McInvale.
