The first-ever Congressional Debate Tournament was held in Austin Jan. 7-8. Preliminary rounds were held at the University of Texas campus, where sophomore Daniel Soto, junior Clayton Jaskinia, and I, senior Rosa Rosales, competed alongside 19 other schools from our conference.
Out of over 40 congress representatives competing, Soto and myself and 19 others advanced to the final round or “Super Congress,” which was held at the State Capitol, which also meant another seven hours.
Soto was nominated and voted in as the presiding officer, where he controlled the debate. It was his first time to take on this challenge, which he embraced superbly. He said, “It was a long 14 hours in the chamber, but the experience was the real reward.” There were two sessions that lasted seven hours with intense competition that left us exhausted when it came to an end. However, both Soto and Jaskinia are hoping to return next year.
I’m so glad all of our hard work paid off! Getting to speak at the state Capitol building in Austin was possibly a once-in-a-lifetime experience, none of which would have happened without the help of our speech coach, Amy Lyssy, who definitely had a lot of patience with us.
We would also like to thank our UIL Director Tiffany Polasek who took time out of her busy schedule to drive us to the tournament.
Poth High School senior Rosa Rosales is the daughter of Jose and Vicortia Rosales. She is a member of the FCCLA and participates in UIL informative speaking and current events. She works at Taqueria Jalisco and plans to major in mass communications in college.
