This series profiles area organizations that help meet needs in our communities, and connects volunteers with good causes.

Organization: Labatt Extension Education Club

What it does: This group of women volunteers believes in the sanctity of the home, said member Deci Murphy, adding, “We should all learn to work, play, and have compassion for the less fortunate, but also to share responsibilities to form citizens who will uphold the best ways of life.”

This not-for-profit group supports various local endeavors, such as the social work services department of the Floresville Independent School District with donations to its backpack program, along with canned goods and toiletries for district families in need, as well as donating stuffed animals for the children served by the Connally Memorial Medical Center’s emergency room. Members also provide items for area nursing home games and activities, work with the 4-H program, and support the county’s Child Protective Services program. They also award scholarships to local high school graduates.

Background: The club was established in 1934 as the Wilson County Home Demonstration Club. It serves Floresville and surrounding areas. Members meet monthly at the Floresville Lutheran Church, 1406 C St.

How you can help: The group’s annual Valentine bake sale is Friday, Feb. 14, at the American Legion Hall on the courthouse square in downtown Floresville.
