The La Vernia Independent School District (ISD) hopes to name a new superintendent in May and has secured the assistance of TASB Executive Search Services to aid in the search.
This was confirmed by school board President Cody Miller after the trustees’ Jan. 13 meeting.
The trustees approved retaining the organization for a fee of $7,500.
“Our target date for the permanent superintendent to be named is May 22, with a target start date of July 1,” Dr. Miller said. “The job will be posted immediately and applications will be accepted through TASB [Texas Association of School Boards] until midnight on March 31.”
A decision about where and when the position will be advertised will be decided at a special called meeting Jan. 23 at 6:30 p.m., Miller said. After an executive session, the board approved posting the position, effective Jan. 14.
In other business, the trustees:
•Approved new Finance Director Kati Burk as the district’s investment officer.
•Approved a retainer for Walsh, Anderson; the firm will continue to serve as the district’s legal counsel.
An executive session was scheduled; however, the board did not take any action regarding new hires, Miller said.
The district trustees also honored La Vernia News and Wilson County News Editor Nannette Kilbey-Smith, naming her to the 2014 Media Honor Roll, a program sponsored by TASB.
A resolution approved by the trustees expresses the board’s appreciation for the newspapers’ “... balanced and accurate approach to sharing with this community both the challenges facing our schools and the successes achieved by the teachers and students.”
Accepting the award was newspaper Publisher Elaine Kolodziej.
The school board meeting was preceded by an appreciation dinner for the trustees and administrators, catered by the La Vernia High School Culinary Arts students. A ribbon-cutting event for the high school’s 500 building also took place, marking the completion of another part of the bond construction on district campuses.
