Wilson County Emergency Services District (ESD) No. 1, serving the La Vernia area, will spend more than $700,000 to finance building a second fire station to service its coverage area.

During the ESD’s board meeting Jan. 13, the board authorized a 20-year loan from Government Capital for $735,957, with an interest rate of 4.375 percent.

Board Vice President Quinten Kiolbassa also offered a motion to create a $15,000 contingency account for Station No. 2. This fund would pay for unanticipated “overages.” This also met with approval.

The discussion turned to the district’s proposed Station No. 3, with board Secretary Terry Post advising that contracts to purchase the new property were signed and delivered to Title Express and a survey of the property was ordered. A closing date was set for early in February.

La Vernia Volunteer Fire Department Chief Jason Scheel, in his report to the board, presented a need for the department to have its own air compression service. Following the news that the engine of one of the fire engines had been “redone” after successfully acquiring the needed engine block, Scheel reported that the department’s air compressor needed replacement. He has applied for a grant from the Forest Service to pay for it; in the meantime, he said, the fire engines have to drive to Stockdale for air compression service.

Board President George Jones recommended that Scheel obtain three bids for building “a whole filling station,” with an estimated cost of $34,000, and return to the board with the information so it could make a decision on how to proceed.

Scheel also said that of the department’s four fire engines, two are in service, a third is “80 percent in service,” and the fourth is out of service because it needs new hoses.

Jones recommended that Scheel obtain three bids for hoses. Scheel estimated the cost to be about $4,000 and said he would also try to find where he could find the amount in his budget.

“We’ll need a special meeting,” ESD Treasurer Roberta Ensor said. “Call me when you’re ready.”

Also during the meeting, the board reorganized. Ensor announced that board member Bill Mercado had resigned for personal reasons. Jones now serves as president, Kiolbassa as vice president, and Post as secretary; Ensor is the new treasurer. Post said that he is planning to move to Alaska, but will serve as secretary until then.

“We want to change offices every year or so, so no one seems to have a lock on their position,” Jones said.

In attendance: ESD No. 1 board members Roberta Ensor, George Jones, Terry Post, and Quinten Kiolbassa.

Such a waste- they removed the building and concrete. That was good taxpayer money down the drain.

William: That didn't help a bit. Why was it removed? To make room for the new building?

Does anyone know why they tore down the fire station by the water tower (CR 3432 & FM 775)? It took them forever to get the metal building up (a few years back) and now it's gone.

Can anyone tell me if these cost numbers include the equipment needed to operate out of these new stations? Then there is the question of "Staffing." I have seen signs requesting Volunteer firefighters. Will La ... More ›
