Firefighters battle area blazes
Firefighters battle a blaze Jan. 18 that claimed a home on Oak View Drive in La Vernia.
LA VERNIA -- A mother and her two teenage children are picking up the pieces following a Jan. 18 blaze that rendered their home on Oak View Drive a total loss.
Volunteer fire departments from La Vernia, Stockdale, Sutherland Springs, and Eagle Creek converged on the home at approximately 5:30 p.m. and remained on the scene for almost four hours, said La Vernia Fire Chief Jason Scheel. He said the home’s occupants reported burning trash the day before and that the debris reignited and the flames burned under the house before igniting the entire structure.
Cecelia McCullough and her children were not at home when the blaze started. Scheel said the family’s four dogs managed to escape unharmed.
Area residents are rallying to assist the family. One organization, the LV Angels, posted on its Facebook page that the McCulloughs’ immediate need is clothing. They plan to rent a travel trailer and will need household goods -- not furniture.
Donations are being accepted weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in La Vernia. To contact McCullough directly, call 210-441-9610.
See House fire, page 2A, for information on making donations to the family.
