Polished Edge: Enjoy Texas artists at Feb. 6 Opry
The Feb. 6 Opry will present a tribute to the late country legend, Ray Price.
See an array of musical talent at the Floresville Opry on Thursday, Feb. 6, from 6-9:30 p.m. in the Floresville Event Center at 600 S.H. 97 W. in Floresville.
Not only will House Band “Playin’ to Win” perform a tribute to Ray Price, but other favorites such as Louis Hohmann, Denny Ivey, Priscilla Speed, and Conrad Gonzales will be on hand to keep the crowd energized and entertained.
Louis Hohmann, singer and guitar player from Shiner, was born on a farm in Lavaca County. At age 18, he purchased a guitar. He taught himself to play while serving in the Army. When he was released from military service, he sold his guitar but his love for music continued. In 1996, he started to play the guitar again and had already formed his own band, “Just Country.” They played for many dances and social events in South Texas. The band is no longer together but Louis continues to play and sing that good classic country music.
Denny Ivey, a singer from McQueeney, is a retired coach who grew up in a musical family out in the West Texas town of Rotan. He first started enjoying country music as a young man attending dances where Hoyle Nix (who played mostly Bob Wills’ music) and the “West Texas Cowboys” band performed. Since then Denny has continued to enjoy listening to and singing country music. He has performed in country music shows across South Texas. He and his wife, Delphine, have one son and two grandchildren.
Priscilla Speed of Staples sang throughout South Texas in the early ’90s with her brother, Bill York, and his band, “The Fifth Wheel.” She has recorded three albums, including some original music, country, and gospel songs. She has shared the stage with Tommy Cash, Leona Williams, Carl Jackson, Moe Bandy, the late Johnny Lyon, and other well-known performers from Maine to Florida and Georgia to Texas. Music is definitely a ministry in any venue and will always be a way for her to reach out to others.
Other singers will include Conrad Gonzales, who has performed in the Floresville Opry in the past and has written two songs produced by Kenny Penny Productions. His CDs will be on sale at the Opry for $5. Also appearing will be Floresville Opry emcee Jim Helmke, rhythm guitar player Diane Farley, drummer Frutoso Balderas, and lead guitar player Kenny Penny. Steel guitar player Randy Reinhard and fiddle player Rodney Smith will be doing instrumentals.
General admission is $10 per person or $120 for a reserved table that seats 10. General admission tickets are available at the Wilson County News and the Sam Fore Jr. Wilson County Public Library.
