The South Texas stock show season is well under way, with the road leading to Wilson County. This week, the Wilson County Junior Livestock Show began Jan. 18 with the horse show, picked up again on Wednesday, Jan. 22, and will conclude Saturday, Jan. 25, with the livestock and baked foods show auction set for 2 p.m. Judging events will take place in the Wilson County Show Barn located east of Floresville on S.H. 97, with the auction to take place Saturday at the Floresville Event Center, located west of Floresville at 600 S.H. 97 W.

Activity has been seen throughout the week, as ag teachers, 4-H and FFA sponsors, parents, and others prepare the grounds for the show, involving everything from lambs, goats, poultry, and turkeys to cattle, swine, rabbits, ag mechanics, and a baked foods show. And for those wanting to kick up their heels, a dance also will be held.

Wednesday’s events include the judging of breeding sheep at 4:30 p.m., followed by the market lamb show and sheep showmanship. Other events include the judging of breeding goats at 6 p.m., followed by market goats and showmanship.

The judging of rabbits begins the activities Thursday at 9 a.m. The judging of breeding hogs begins at 3 p.m. or 30 minutes after the completion of the rabbit show, whichever is later. The show continues with the ever-popular market hog show and showmanship honors.

The judging of poultry begins Friday’s activities at 10 a.m. with broilers, followed by turkeys.

The final judging event is the cattle show, which begins Friday at 1 p.m. with the judging of breeding stock.

The announcement of the grand champion steer will take place during the judging of the market steers, set for 4 p.m., ending with the announcement of steer showmanship winners.

Baked foods show/dance

The baked foods show will take place Friday, with the posting of baked foods show at 2:30 p.m. Non-auction baked foods sale items will begin at 3 p.m.

Friday night’s activities conclude with the annual Wilson County Teen Dance, from 8 p.m. until midnight. The event, sponsored by the Wilson County 4-H Council, will be held in the show barn. Presale tickets are $5 and can be purchased from any of the County 4-H Clubs or 4-H Council students. Tickets will be $7 at the door. Parents will be allowed to stay at no charge. For more information regarding the dance, call Julie at 210-744-3093 or Ivy at 210-274-7617.

Auction

The baked foods auction will once again be held in conjunction with the auction of champions, set for Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Floresville Event Center. At the conclusion of the auction, the results of the ag mechanics silent auction will be announced.

The Wilson County Junior Livestock Show’s premium auction allows the students to retain their animals after the sale, thus allowing the exhibitors to show their animals in other shows.

Businesses and individuals are invited to participate in the Kash for Kids program, now in its 10th year. See related article, page 2D.

As the Wilson County show concludes, the Fort Worth show continues through Saturday, Feb. 8.

Prior to the Fort Worth show’s conclusion, trail riders will begin their trek to the 65th annual San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo, set for Wednesday, Feb. 5, through Sunday, Feb. 23.

Brief history

The Wilson County Junior Livestock Show sales were held in various locations throughout the years.

In the ’60s and ’70s, the exhibitors brought their animals to the Floresville Livestock Commission Co. for sale.

Later shows were held on a rotation basis between the three towns of Floresville, Stockdale, and Poth. These auctions were under the management of the Floresville Livestock Commission Co., the Karnes City Auction, and later the Nixon Livestock Commission Inc.

According to archives of the Floresville Chronicle-Journal, locations included Fahrenthold Gin in Poth, the McDonald Farm near Floresville, the Peanut Dryers in Floresville, and the Rodeo Arena in Stockdale.

In the 1970s, the Wilson County Junior Livestock Show Committee voted to consolidate the sale to the Wilson County Show Barn in Floresville.

2014 marks the first year that the auction will be held at the Floresville Event Center.
