LA VERNIA -- Police here report receiving more than 10 complaints about telephone calls that are purported to have been placed from La Vernia City Hall.

Sgt. Danny Pitts of the La Vernia Police Department said Jan. 22 that in each instance, the recipient’s caller ID has fraudulently displayed City Hall’s telephone number, a practice known as “caller ID spoofing.” Complaints have come from all over Texas.

Pitts said technology, such as Magicjack, allows users to input any telephone number. However, he reminds residents that manipulating a caller identification system, for purposes other than conducting a law-enforcement investigation, violates the federal Truth in Caller ID Act of 2009. According to the Federal Communication Commission’s (FCC) website, each violation carries a $10,000 fine.

Anyone who gets such a call is urged to file a complaint with the FCC at 1-888-CALL-FCC (225-5322) or at http://fcc.us/1aJPumH. Complainants also can provide the complaint number to the La Vernia Police Department, for use in its investigation, at 830-779-2113, ext. 1.
