Traffic stop helps deputies arrest burglary suspect
FLORESVILLE -- A nighttime traffic stop Jan. 16 on F.M. 775 has resulted in the capture of a man who Wilson County Sheriff’s Office deputies believe is responsible for the burglary of a deceased woman’s home.
Sheriff’s Deputy Toribio “Toby” Garcia conducted the stop on F.M. 775 west of the U.S. 181 intersection after spotting a silver 2000 Mitsubishi Mirage with a defective rear license plate light. William Davis Phillips, 28, 44-year-old Max Marroquin, and 24-year-old Sarah Ellen Wallace, all of Floresville, were the vehicle’s occupants.
Wallace and Marroquin each were arrested on outstanding warrants. While deputies performed an inventory of the vehicle, they found a small red plastic bag containing 0.1 grams of crystallized methamphetamine. When none of the vehicle’s occupants claimed ownership of the illegal narcotic, sheriff’s Investigator Richard Nichols said each was charged with possession of less than 1 gram of a controlled substance in Penalty Group 1, before being transported to the Wilson County Jail.
Phillips was identified as a suspect in an ongoing burglary investigation being conducted by Cpl. Gary Laughlin Jr., after a Wells Fargo bank employee reported that Phillips attempted to cash an $800 check that belonged to an 80-year-old Floresville woman who died in May 2013. Family members had closed her bank account two months later.
Relatives who went to the home Jan. 11 to clean called deputies after finding that a front window had been broken and several cabinets and drawers were left open. Missing from the home were a box of jewelry, two purses containing miscellaneous loose jewelry items, and prescription medication.
Phillips also was charged with burglary of a habitation and with forgery. Jail records indicate he since has been released after posting a total of $57,500 bond.
