Police here soon will join other departments throughout the state that are on the CopSync system, following the Floresville City Council’s unanimous vote Jan. 23.

The council voted to approve a service agreement for CopSync hardware and software, including 11 laptop computers with docks and citation printers, 8 hours of training, and integration of the system with the Floresville Municipal Court, at a total cost of $101,000, said city Comptroller Lara Feagins. The city will finance the purchase with a 4-year loan from Government Capital Corp.

Highlights of CopSync include the ability for patrol officers to view someone’s driving record or criminal background with a simple swipe of a driver license. In seconds, information --including recent traffic stops, active arrest warrants, and criminal records -- is viewable by the officer’s in-car computer. This, said Police Chief Lorenzo Herrera, will help alleviate the department’s growing dependence upon Wilson County Sheriff’s Office dispatchers.

Also being financed with Government Capital is the purchase of a new patrol vehicle for the police department. The vehicle, Feagins said, will be purchased from Caldwell Country Chevrolet and will cost $37,915. The city will repay this over a period of three years.

Another vehicle-related item approved by the council was a fleet fueling contract with U.S. Bank National Association. Feagins said Floresville currently refuels all city-owned vehicles at the municipal yard on First Street, where the current pump and tank need replacement. Implementation of a fuel-card system, which will allow employees -- via unique personal-identification numbers -- to refuel vehicles at any participating station statewide, will cost far less, she said, and usage can be tracked electronically.

“Right now we have no way of tracking ... It’s totally on an honor system,” Feagins said.

In other business, the council voted to approve early voting dates ahead of the May 10 special election to fill the council Place 1 vacancy. Watch for more information in a future issue of the Wilson County News.

In attendance: Mayor Diana Garza and councilmen Mario Morones, Johnny Ray Nieto, John W. Guerrero, and Eric Rodriguez; City Manager Henrietta Turner, Comptroller Lara Feagins, City Secretary Sherry Pollok, Administrative Assistant Monica Cordova, Construction Manager Andrew Barrientes, Police Chief Lorenzo Herrera, Attorney Chris Hugg of the Law Offices of Louis T. Rosenberg, and Bailiff Albert Litterio.

Will the FISD install COPsync. Waco ISD has installed the software which I read will provide direct contact with the police in case of emergency....eliminating the dispatcher.
