FLORESVILLE -- After picking up two more wins last week, the Floresville Jaguar basketball team remains in position to grab the District 29-4A title, but the ladies likely need to win out to stay ahead of Medina Valley.
The Jaguars started things off last Tuesday with a home game against McCollum. Floresville didn’t go easy on their guests, however, as the Jags jumped all over the Cowgirls and held a 21-7 lead after the first period of play. Things evened out a bit in the second stanza, but Floresville continued to apply pressure, and once again outscored its opponent. As the teams headed for the locker room, it was the Jags on top, 35-16.
The closest period of all was played in the third, as the scoring went back and forth. McCollum had its best scoring quarter of the game with 15 points, but Floresville kept pace with 16. The Jags went back to their dominating ways in the fourth period, scoring 18 points, while holding McCollum to just 6. When the final buzzer sounded, it was Floresville with the big win, 69-37.
Kristyn Coldewey led the Jaguar offensive effort with 16 points, followed by De Havalan Watts with 14. Watts, Lauren Trevino, and Amber Wasicek each had three assists.
On Jan. 24, the Jags traveled to Harlandale to take on the Lady Indians. Floresville nearly gave it away in the fourth period, but held on for a 56-53 win.
Things were pretty even throughout the first period of play, but Harlandale held a slight advantage at 14-13 after the first eight minutes of play. Floresville settled into the game nicely in the second period, though, and outscored the Lady Indians 15-3 in the second to take a 28-17 lead into halftime.
After the break, Floresville continued to stay on top, outscoring Harlandale in the third period to extend the lead to 17 points at 45-28. In the fourth period, however, things came apart for Floresville. The Lady Indians caught fire and the Jags did little to slow them down. The double-digit lead evaporated as Harlandale outscored Floresville 25-11 in the period, and pulled to within 3 points. The Jags held off the Lady Indians until the final buzzer, though, giving Floresville a 56-53 victory.
Watts led the offense with 19 points, followed by Sarina Thompson, Coldewey, and Trevino with 8 points each. Coldewey pounded the boards for 11 rebounds, and Thompson was good for another eight.
The victories lifted Floresville to 10-1 in district play, and 20-10 overall. The Jaguars were scheduled to face Memorial on Jan. 28, and will be at home against Uvalde on Friday, Jan. 31. If Floresville can win both games, and Medina Valley continues to win out, the Jags and Lady Panthers will play Tuesday, Feb. 4, in Medina Valley to decide the district title.
