Morgan Shepherd is not letting his age of 72 hold him back, especially when it comes to racing. The driver has plans to race in this year’s Daytona 500 on Feb. 23. He’ll be behind the wheel of the No. 93 Toyota fielded by MacDonald Motorsports and Dell Hamilton. The car will be leased from BK Racing.

Since the team does not have 2013 owner points to fall back on, Shepherd will have to qualify his way into the Daytona 500 race field, either by speed during pole qualifying on Sunday or doing qualifying races on Feb. 13.

If Shepherd qualifies his way into the Daytona 500, he’ll become the oldest driver, ever, to start the race. He already holds the record as the oldest driver to start any Sprint Cup event, competing in last year’s July race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon at the age of 71.

“Whenever you can break a record or make history, it’s something special,” Hamilton told the Sporting News of Shepherd’s plans.

Shepherd has 515 Cup-level starts to his credit, resulting in four race wins. He’s still a regular competitor in the Nationwide Series.
