Inquiries from a wide cross section of Wilson County News readers continue following a possible explosion that occurred somewhere in Wilson County Feb. 2.
Wilson County Sheriff Joe D. Tackitt Jr. said that a deputy searched the vicinity of C.R. 434 north of Stockdale after someone reported the loud noise and vibration at approximately 4 p.m. The deputy found nothing that would suggest a cause or an exact location of such an event.
Within three days, a post on the newspaper’s Facebook page that asked fans to share their experiences related to the event generated 2,401 views, 17 likes, 37 comments, and 12 shares from locales including Elmendorf, La Vernia, Stockdale, Sutherland Springs, Pandora, and Nixon. Some thought it was thunder, while others ran to check on loved ones when their houses and windows shook.
“We live in Sutherland Springs and it was a horribly loud boom, shook the house and especially the windows,” commented Granny Barbie Jane.
Susan Jim Urban said, “At around 4, I heard a very loud boom and ran outside to make sure my husband was okay ...”
So, what was it?
Dave Mundy of the Gonzales Cannon commented that word was spreading of someone in the Nixon area who was shooting at exploding rifle targets, such as those manufactured by Tannerite.
A seismographic cause can be ruled out, as the U.S. Geological Survey Earthquake Hazards Program website indicates there only was one seismographic event reported in Texas on Feb. 2. That one, a magnitude 2.3 earthquake, had an epicenter 4 miles south-southeast of Benbrook -- a city located near Fort Worth.
Some commenters speculated that the noise might have been a rumble of thunder. Meteorologist Steve Smart of the Austin-San Antonio National Weather Service Forecast Office said that at 3:35 p.m., thunderstorms were detected within 5-10 miles of Stinson Field in southern San Antonio.
Others speculate that it might have been a sonic boom caused by supersonic aircraft. A spokesman from Joint Base San Antonio did not comment prior to press time Feb. 11.
