Share oddities for ‘Shoebox Showcase’
Following the successful exhibit, “Bones, Bullets and Blades,” the La Vernia Heritage Museum now has two empty display cases to fill until the next exhibit is ready in a few months. The museum, operated by the La Vernia Historical Association, is offering the space to anyone who has items of local historical interest--as long as the items fit in one shoebox.
“People have told us about very interesting items and artifacts they are willing to loan us, so now is the time to share them,” said Museum Director Susan Richter.
The museum seeks items on loan for display from now through May; due to limited space, each chosen collection will be displayed by the curators in an area approximately the size of one shoebox. The donor’s name will be listed with the artifact.
“This ‘Shoebox’ exhibit will have no specific theme, only that each item is on a short-term loan from our patrons,” said association President Elaine Stephens.
Old, odd, unusual, or just interesting items are welcome. Each selected item will be photographed, documented, numbered, and recorded. Items should be of local historical interest, ready for display, and authentic. They will be reviewed by the La Vernia Historical Association before being accepted and may be delivered to the museum on the first and third Sunday of the month from noon to 3 p.m., and by appointment.
Items in the “Shoebox Showcase” can be viewed during those same hours and by appointment.
The museum is located in the old red brick firehouse on U.S. 87 at FM775/Bluebonnet. Admission is free. Call 210-392-3281 for an appointment.
