Bear powerlifters finish second in Wildcat Classic
Members of the La Vernia Bear powerlifting team celebrate their second-place finish at the Wildcat Classic in Yorktown.
YORKTOWN -- It was a good meet for the La Vernia Bear powerlifting team, as it traveled to Yorktown Feb. 1 to compete in the Wildcat Classic.
Several of the team’s lifters earned individual medals, and the Bears finished second overall in the team standings from among a field of 14 teams represented by 111 lifters.
Athletes who finished in the top five in their weight class earned points for their team, and the Bear lifters came through in a number of weight classes.
In the 123-pound class, Devin Goddard scored for La Vernia with a fifth-place finish. Goddard had a bench press of 110 pounds, a squat of 200 pounds, and a deadlift of 225.
In the 181-pound class, two Bears scored points for La Vernia. Tristan Summy earned a silver medal with his second-place effort. He had a three-lift total of 1,085 pounds, after turning in a bench press of 255 pounds, a squat of 385, and a dead lift of 445 pounds. Teammate Kyler Puhlmann was only 30 pounds back in fourth place after he scored on a bench press of 240 pounds, a dead lift of 405, and a squat of 410 pounds.
The Bears also picked up team points in the 198-pound class, as Vince Gill finished second, and Nathan Muehe was fifth. Gill turned in a bench press of 270 pounds, a dead lift of 445, and had a squat of 485. Muehe had a bench press of 250 pounds, a dead lift of 375, and a squat of 400 pounds.
Miguel Luna finished third in the 220-pound class, and Anthony Trevino was right behind him in fourth. Luna had a bench press of 205, a squat of 335, and a dead lift of 380 pounds. Trevino only turned in a bench press, but it was enough to score points for the team.
Joe Belinski scored a fourth-place finish in the 242-pound class with a bench press of 220 pounds, a dead lift of 350, and a squat of 395. Brendan Dillard was third in the 275-pound class after impressive numbers like a 335-pound bench press, a 520-pound dead lift, and a 535-pound squat. The three-lift total of 1,390 pounds was the most for La Vernia, and was the second highest weight total for the entire meet.
Blake Wright rounded out the team scoring for La Vernia with his fourth-place finish in the Super Heavy Weight division. Wright had a bench press of 255, a dead lift of 485, and turned in a squat of 495 pounds.
Other Bear lifters participating in the meet were Travis Puhlmann, Levi Andrews, Gionni Avril, Wyatt Cowsert, Patrick Sullivan, Alex Ibarra, Chad Pargmann, Ramiro Gonzalez, Cameron Maha, and John Stanush.
