The Nixon-Smiley chapter of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) attended the Region V Conference, which was held Jan. 31 and Feb. 1 in Corpus Christi. The chapter members were among 1,000 delegates attending the two-day conference.

STAR (Students Taking Action with Recognition) and Proficiency Events are competitive events in which members will participate at the region meeting.

Nixon-Smiley FCCLA member Katrina Suire participated in the STAR Event, “Life Event Planning,” placing sixth in her category, qualifying her to participate in state association STAR event competition.

Jaelynn Mendiola, Yesenia Ochoa, and Elizabeth Tovar were on hand to assist their advisor, Lisa Brown, facilitate and chair another event.

Jaelynn, Yesenia, and Elizabeth also participated in the FCSAs, bringing home a bronze medal each.

Also, the new officer team for 2014-15 was elected to continue “FCCLA: a World of Opportunities.”
