1921-2014

Juan M. Martinez, 93, of Smiley, died Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2014, in Seguin. He was born in Smiley, Texas, on Jan. 20, 1921, to Jose and Ygnacia (Magaña) Martinez.

Juan is survived by his wife since May 19, 1945, Belen (Sainz) Martinez of Smiley; his children, John Martinez Jr. and wife Eva of Smiley, Beida Aguirre and husband Joe of Smiley, and Rudy S. Martinez and wife Dora of Marion; six grandchildren, Jeffrey Martinez, Yvonne Esparza, Jerry Don Aguirre, Beijo Rice, Kimberly Escobedo, and Kenneth Martinez; 15 great-grandchildren; brothers Jesus Martinez and Ernest Martinez; sisters Maria Diaz and Irene Bermea; numerous nieces and nephews; and many friends.

Visitation was held on Friday, Feb. 14, from 5-8 p.m. with a rosary recited at 7 p.m. in the Finch Funeral Chapel in Nixon.

A funeral Mass was held Saturday at 9 a.m. in the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Nixon.

Interment followed in the Smiley Latin American Cemetery in Gonzales County.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, or to a charity of one’s choice.
