Betty Jean (Rochester) Rivers was called home to be with the Lord on Monday, Feb. 10, 2014, at the age of 86. She was born April 15, 1927, to Delmore F. and Willie Belle (Terrill) Rochester.

After graduation from Brackenridge High School in 1945, Betty worked as an office clerk at Dodd Field at Fort Sam Houston. There she met Jimmy, who had just returned from serving in Germany. They married a year later in the Denver Heights Methodist Church. Later she worked at Fox Photo in the processing plant for more than 20 years. In her younger years, Bettyv enjoyed roller skating, ice skating, reading, and sewing. During the early ’70s, James and Betty moved to Adkins, where she enjoyed serving with the Masonic Lodge and the Eastern Star Chapter in La Vernia. She loved to tend to the garden, quilt, create crafts, bird watch, and continued to read a book a week, up until her death.

A special thanks goes out to her neighbors and close friends, Frank and LaJuana Offield, Doug, Amy, Crista, and Delane St. Cyr, and Jimmy and Kathy Knox for caring for Betty like she was family. Betty’s family is blessed to have you in their lives. In addition, the family would like to thank the Everlasting Covenant Home family for their loving care in providing Betty with assistance and dignity in her last months.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James G. Rivers; her parents; her brother, Wesley A. Rochester; and “sister” June Nesrsta and husband Frank.

Betty is survived by her nephews, Steven and James W. Rochester and wife Shannon; niece Cheryl (Rochester) Villanueva and husband Sal; two great-nieces, Jennifer (Rochester) Thomas and husband Barre and Loren Rochester; twin great-nieces Evie and Lizzie Crovatt; and great-nephew Cannon Thomas.

An informal visitation and celebration of Betty’s life was held on Saturday, Feb. 15, from 10 a.m. to noon in the Finch Funeral Chapel in La Vernia, Texas.

Interment followed in the Concrete Cemetery in La Vernia.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Paws & Claws Thrift Shop, 2318 Blanco Road, San Antonio, TX 78212, where donations and proceeds benefit animal rescue; or any other animal rescue organization of one’s choice.
