East Central ISD names Toscano as lone superintendent finalist
EAST CENTRAL -- Following a special meeting here Feb. 10, East Central High School Principal Roland Toscano has been named the lone finalist for the East Central Independent School District superintendent position to be filled later this year.
Gary Patterson, the district’s longtime superintendent, announced his retirement last year, after 14 years with East Central. In a statement released by East Central ISD, Patterson showed his support of Toscano.
“Roland is a very special and gifted young man with an extremely bright future ahead of him,” Patterson said. “He will do an excellent job of leading this great district into the future.”
Patterson’s last day will be July 1.
Toscano, a graduate of East Central High School, has been employed by the district in various capacities since 1997.
After graduating from East Central High School and earning his bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas at San Antonio, Toscano began his career in education in 1997 as a middle school science teacher and coach. In 2001, Toscano moved over to East Central High School, where he again taught science and worked as a coach. He was promoted to high school assistant principal in 2005, and became the principal of Heritage Middle School in 2006. In 2007, Toscano was promoted to be principal of East Central High School. He has served in that capacity ever since.
“The East Central community values its schools and demands excellence from them,” Toscano wrote in an email to the Wilson County News following the announcement. “Although the challenges that lie ahead are monumental, I am ready to embrace the responsibility that accompanies this appointment. Moreover, I am abundantly grateful for the opportunity to serve my community in this capacity.”
Toscano said his first order of business would be to ensure a seamless transition for the next principal at East Central High School. He also took a moment to credit his predecessor, the board, and everyone who is a part of East Central.
“The admirable reputation that East Central ISD currently holds has not happened by chance,” he said. “With the support of an exceptional school board, our district’s personnel work tirelessly to provide superior learning experiences for every student in every school, every day.”
According to Texas law, a 21-day period will be allowed for contract negotiation. The waiting period must pass before the board takes a final vote.
