Time for HS seniors to file FAFSA form
By Sonya Pruski
Parents of seniors, it is time to file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, better known as the FAFSA, for your son or daughter. Every Jan. 1, the FAFSA opens and it closes June 30 of every year. I always advise the students to try to complete the FAFSA in February or early March!
The first step is to apply for a PIN for one parent and for your son/daughter. You will use that PIN every year for FAFSA. Visit https://fafsa.ed.gov, then link at the top of the web page that takes you to the PIN site. Look for a lock symbol at the top of the webpage and click on it. Remember, the student needs one and the parent needs one! Parents, if you have a PIN that you used with another child, or if you have been a college student, you do not need a new PIN. Use the one you already have.
You will need your 2013 Income Tax information and W-2 forms. There is a full list of what you will need to complete the FAFSA at www.fafsa.gov.
Remember to apply as soon as possible; free aid is given out as people apply! So, if you qualify, but you don’t file until June, for example, you would not be awarded free aid such as grants, because when they are gone, they are gone! So, let’s get those taxes done, parents, and then move on to the FAFSA! Good luck!
If you have any questions, call Mrs. Pruski at 830-996-3103, ext. 1024. The school year of 2013-14 is moving along quickly and it has been a great year so far.
Students are busy with many spring activities, such as the prom, UIL academic meets, and sporting events, and they are still keeping up with their studies. Seniors are busy with college applications, and now it is time for these students to start choosing their final selection for schools!
Parents, one more item, if you work for a company, make sure to check with your main office to see if your company awards scholarships!
