The Stockdale Blue Bonnet Club met Feb. 10 in the home of Teri Wolff. Refreshments were served by the hostess upon the arrival of members for the regular business meeting.

The meeting was called to order by President Bernice Person. The minutes of the January meeting and the treasurer’s report were given by Secretary-Treasurer Mildred Kallies. Also, the roll call was conducted by the secretary.

Committee reports were given by the chairpersons. Billie Jo Wolff, Nursing Home Bingo, will take prizes for the April games; Bernice Person, February Nursing Home Visitor, provided Valentine treats for the Valentine Party at the Stockdale Nursing Home; and Card Committee, Helen Deason, sent 45 cards for December 2013 and January 2014.

A letter of resignation was read from Linda Carden, a member since 2009, due to family illnesses.

The March hostess will be Gina Deason with Sue McLelland to serve as the Program Leader. The March Nursing Home Visitor will be Mary Denson.

Program leader Helen Deason presented “Origins and Customs of St. Valentine’s Day” for the day’s program. Saint Valentine was known for performing secret marriages against the wishes of Claudius II, which eventually landed him in jail. The legend of St. Valentine goes on to say that while he was imprisoned, Claudius II attempted to convert him to paganism and Valentine tried to convince the emperor to become a Christian. The two sides never did see eye to eye, and in the end, Valentine was executed.

Valentine’s Day is the single most romantic day of the year and is the second most popular day for proposals of marriage (after Christmas) and the most popular for weddings. Each year, approximately 1 billion Valentine’s cards are exchanged, which again places the holiday after only Christmas for the most greeting cards sent. Teachers, as a category, receive the most Valentine cards. If the brisk sales of heart-shaped candies, greeting cards, jewelry, and red roses are any indication, St. Valentine’s Day is here to stay!

A Valentine quiz followed the program, with Molly Rowell and Barbara Wiatrek declared as winners. Valentine cards and bags of Valentine treats were presented to the members present.

In attendance for the meeting were Edith Akin, Susan Cotter, Gina Deason, Helen Deason, Mildred Kallies, Sue McLelland, Bernice Person, Molly Rowell, Barbara Wiatrek, Billie Jo Wolff, and Teri Wolff.
