BEEVILLE -- They got off to a slow start, but after strong second- and third-period efforts, the Falls City Beaverette basketball team knocked off the Ben Bolt Lady Badgers 40-21 last week to win the area championship and advance to the regional quarterfinals.

Falls City was off to a slower start than normal against Ben Bolt, as the Beaverettes managed just 7 points in the first stanza. The Lady Badgers threw in 8 points, and Falls City found itself in unfamiliar territory, trailing in the game.

The Beaverettes responded well in the second period, though, tying up the game and then pulling out in front. The lead wasn’t huge, but as the buzzer sounded ahead of halftime, Falls City held a 19-16 advantage.

The third period was an entirely different story, though. While the Beaverettes had an average scoring period of 9 points, they held the Lady Badgers to a lone free throw. That gave Falls City an 11-point lead heading into the final eight minutes of play, and it would prove more than enough. The Beaverettes easily outscored Ben Bolt 12-4 in the final stanza, and claimed the area championship with a 40-21 victory.

Haleigh Blocker led the way for Falls City with 15 points, followed by Hannah Lyssy with 8.

With the win, the Beaverettes advanced to the regional quarterfinals. Falls City was scheduled to square off with Shiner on Feb. 17, though results were unavailable as of press time. A win over Shiner would advance the team to the Region IV tournament at Canyon High School in New Braunfels. A loss ends the team’s season.
