Letter: Petals are falling off ‘San Antonio Rose’
I saw where union members of the San Antonio Fire and Police departments made a brazen show of force at City Hall to oppose proposed reductions in the sweetheart deal that 8 percent of San Antonio voters gave them following a city election some years ago.
This is what happens when only 8 percent of voters do vote, and it’s safe to say the vast majority of the 8 percent voter turnout were family and close friends of firemen and policemen.
City manager Sheryl Scully insists that fire and police union members must increase their share of the cost of health insurance from 9 percent to 30 percent, which is what most employees pay for employer-funded health insurance.
Scully went on to say that by the year 2030 about 100 percent of the city’s budget will be spent on the fire and police departments alone, and city taxes may have to be doubled.
This worrisome financial future plus the expected unraveling of the streetcar fiasco may be signs that the petals are falling off the “San Antonio Rose.”
