Q: You’ve done Olympic commentary before, but you joined coverage of the current Games several days late. Why was that?

A: My kids are in school, and I don’t have baby sitters. My son Matthew came to Torino for a little while, and that was fun, and my husband came up to Vancouver for a couple of days. This is a very long trip, far away ... plus, I’m working. It’s not like I can take care of them all the time.

Q: Are you a good traveler yourself?

A: I guess so. I’ve been doing it a long time. This is a long one, and it’s hard to sit for that long because I have really bad hips.

When I try to stand up straight and it takes me something like three (airplane) aisles, people around me look at me like, “You’re way too young to look like that!” That’s something that’s developed over years, though.

Q: Social media has been a major component of these Olympics. Are you active on sites such as Facebook and Twitter yourself?

A: I am not. I have three kids and don’t seem to be able to make the time for it, because by the end of the day, I’m tired. I have a lot of driving to do, with after-school hours; my two little ones do gymnastics and ballet, and their activities just require me to be in my car a lot.

Somehow, you’re also supposed to be able to fit in making dinner and doing laundry and all of that. My oldest, fortunately, drives himself now. That’s helpful. It’s also a little scary, but it’s helpful.
