Lady Bears fall in region quarterfinal
CONVERSE -- They earned basketball playoff wins over Wimberley and Cuero, but in the region quarterfinals at Judson High School, the La Vernia Lady Bears fell to Boerne by the final score of 78-70.
The Lady Bears traveled to Converse Feb. 18 to enter region play, but struggled to keep pace in the first period. Boerne was on fire to start things off, scoring 23 points in the first eight minutes. La Vernia was doing well, and scored 14, but trailed by 9 at the buzzer.
La Vernia turned things up in the second period, though, outscoring Boerne 17-12. The Lady Bears certainly cut into the lead, but still trailed by 4 at halftime. Boerne carried a 35-31 advantage into the locker room.
The third period of play kept fans from both sides on the edge of their seats. The scoreboard operator was the only one struggling to keep up, as Boerne dropped in 24 points, and La Vernia scored 23. Down by only 5 points, the Lady Bears still had plenty of time to earn the victory.
The Lady Bears played a great fourth period and posted 16 points to the board, but Boerne managed to match their play, and tacked on another 19 to their score. As time expired in the game, it was Boerne on top 78-70, ending the Lady Bears’ 2013-14 season.
Sophomore Autumn Light led the Lady Bears with 16 points, followed by senior Madison Towns and junior Mackenzie Ford with 15 points each. Junior Brooke Martinez was good for another 14. Towns earned another double-double by also pulling down 14 rebounds, and Martinez snagged seven. Light had four assists, Martinez grabbed two steals, and Towns and Light each had a block.
The Lady Bears end their season with an overall record of 27-6. The team made a perfect 10-0 run through District 28-3A to grab the title, and then earned bi-district and area championship victories.
