POTH -- They earned a playoff win over Ingram Moore in the bi-district round, but after falling to East Bernard in the area championship, the 2013-14 season is over for the Poth Pirates.

Poth faced Ingram Moore in the bi-district round last Tuesday, and went away with a 57-52 win. The Pirates initially trailed Moore after the first period of play, but made up for things in the second, and went into the locker room tied at 30-30.

A great third-period effort by the Pirates propelled them to an 8-point lead, and while Moore managed to outscore Poth in the closing minutes, it wasn’t enough to overtake the Pirates.

The victory meant that Poth would advance to the area championship, and waiting for the Pirates was the team from East Bernard. This time, the Pirates were the team that jumped out to the early lead, but the Brahmas rumbled back in the second stanza, outscoring Poth 20-7, and taking a 34-24 lead into halftime.

The Pirates had their best scoring period of the game in the third, as they threw down 21 points. Unfortunately, the Brahmas also scored 21, keeping the 10-point lead secure. Poth followed the third period with another strong showing in the fourth, but East Bernard stayed close. The Brahmas held on for the lead and sent Poth home with a 73-64 loss.

Poth ends its season with an overall record of 20-8. The Pirates finished strong in the district and earned a bi-district victory to add to their résumé. The Pirates will return a number of key players next season, but will have big holes to fill from the loss of its senior class.
