Editorial: Say ‘no-no’ to a ‘Con-Con’
Frequently emails are sent asking for a change to our U.S. Constitution because the person sending it is completely disgusted with the federal government. There is one currently being circulated entitled, “Only three states to go.”
This one is asking that a Constitutional Convention (Con-Con) should be convened to pass a 28th amendment to the U.S. Constitution and limit the federal government. “Congress will make no law that applies to the citizens of the United States that does not apply equally to the senators, representatives of Congress; and, Congress shall make no law that applies to the senators and/or representatives that does not apply equally to the citizens of the United States.”
The email says that if anyone receiving the notice would forward to as many as possible, before a few days have passed, everyone would be notified and the three states that are needed to call the Con-Con could take action.
While we might all like such an amendment, especially when Congress takes way too many liberties for themselves and limits the citizens of the United States, we must be careful of a Constitutional Convention.
The risks of a Constitutional Convention outweigh the good because Article V in the U.S. Constitution does not limit a Con-Con’s purpose, procedure, agenda, or election of delegates and could lead to a runaway convention, causing political chaos, controversy, confrontation, litigation, and judicial activism.
Unless we have the following questions answered, a Con-Con should never be called:
Who would officially call the convention?
Where would the convention be located?
Who would choose the leaders?
What subjects would be discussed?
How would the delegates be chosen?
Would the states that called for the Con-Con be the only states represented, or would all states be involved?
How would the states be represented, by what number? Would the numbers of delegates be determined by how many people from that state called for the Con-Con or by the population of the state?
Do you think that you would be chosen a delegate? Why or why not?
Let’s stop the call for a Constitutional Convention and work instead with Congress by electing persons of value and purpose to keep our country as our Founding Fathers dreamed.
